Die Schmetterlingsblüten sind goldgelb und oft rot überlaufen in 3 - 8 blütigen Dolden. Die reife Hülse springt spiralisch auf. Die Blätter sind 3fach gefiedert mit 2 Nebenblättern und der Stängel ist markig und kantig.
Man findet den Gemeinen Hornklee auf Wiesen, an Wegrändern und Schuttplätzen. Er ist häufig zu finden.
Änhliche Art: Sumpf-Hornklee, Lotus uligonosus, seine Laubblätter sind 5zählig gefiedert. Man findet ihn in Flachmooren, auf feuchten Wiesen, an Gräben und Ufer zersteut.
